The Maryland Tourism Council and Maryland Hotel and Lodging Association along with the Restaurant Association of Maryland and the Maryland Wineries Association are co-hosting the “Taste of Maryland” Legislative Reception. Monday, January 18 from 5-7:30 p.m. members of Maryland’s tourism industry will participate in a reception with Maryland legislators at the Loews Annapolis Hotel. The Taste of Maryland Legislative Reception is an event that showcases a host of Maryland restaurants and their culinary creations in front of decision-makers for the state’s tourism budget and other tourism related legislative issues. Representatives from tourism and hospitality businesses and properties from around the state will be at the event in support of Maryland tourism and to talk to legislators about tourism marketing.
Though always of great interest to Maryland’s tourism professionals, this year’s legislative session carries even greater importance as a result of the challenging economy. During the last Legislative Session, the Maryland General Assembly voted to fully fund the Maryland Tourism Development Board’s marketing budget at $6M. Since that time, due to the State’s severe budget crisis, the Board of Public Works has reduced that fund to $2.7M. The State Office of Tourism is now allocated less than half of the budgeted amount for marketing the State’s tourism industry.
The Governor and the Office of Budget and Management are working on next year’s budget which will be submitted to the General Assembly on January 20. Tourism supports jobs for more than 140,000 Marylanders and generates more than $1.7 billion in state and local taxes. (Source: Global Insights) The January 18th event is an ideal opportunity for professionals in the tourism industry to create a strong united voice in front of the state’s government officials.
The Taste of Maryland Legislative Reception will feature an open bar and signature tastes from more than 20 Maryland restaurants. Open bars will be stocked with products from MillerCoors, complimentary wines provided by the Maryland Wineries Association, and refreshing FIJI Water. Tickets are $60 per person and can be purchased online in advance at http://www.thetasteofmaryland.com/.
The Maryland Tourism Council and Maryland Hotel and Lodging Associations are advocates for member businesses, properties, products, and services that contribute to Maryland’s hospitality and tourism industry and the Taste of Maryland Legislative Reception is a critical event in communicating the value of the state’s tourism industry to public officials and legislative decision-makers.
